Notice of Upcoming Open House on the Area D Official Community Plan October 5th, 2023 at the Oyster Bay Resort – Drop in between 2PM and 7PM

Campbell River, BC – The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is encouraging Area D community members to get involved and share their feedback by attending an upcoming Official Community Plan review event.

An Official Community Plan (OCP) is a principal planning document that provides guidance on the future growth and development of the community. It sets the long-term vision, providing goals and policies to guide decision making related to land use and development. The current OCP was adopted in 1996 and is being updated to reflect the needs and vision of the current community and address modern challenges.

In 2017, the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) initiated a process to review and update the OCP for Electoral Area D, which includes lands and waters between Oyster Bay and Buttle Lake, including the Shelter Point and Stories Beach neighbourhoods south of Campbell River. The project team completed a comprehensive engagement process that included; public information meetings, community visioning round table meetings, community focus group meetings, a public hearing, and a referrals process to engage public agencies and First Nations.

Community involvement is key to ensure the OCP reflects the ideas and input of the people who live and work in Area ‘D’ and speaks to the unique context of local concerns.

“After hearing from the community that there is an interest in updating the 2017 draft OCP, we are consulting with residents to see what they would like changed,” said John Rice, Electoral Area D Director. “We want to ensure that everybody has an opportunity to give updated comments, and hopefully we’ll have a new OCP before the end of this year.”

On October 5th, 2023, at the Oyster Bay Resort, drop in between 2PM and 7PM to have your say on the key topics addressed in an OCP:

  1. Land use
  2. Density and Housing
  3. Services
  4. Parks and Trails
  5. Climate Change and Environment
  6. Transportation and Transit

The goal of the event is to ensure that the community values and vision accurately reflects the current community.

The SRD would like to thank all community members for responses to the online version of the OCP Feedback Survey that closed last month.  The survey results along with the feedback received from the upcoming October 5th community review event will help form Area D’s Official Community Plan.   For more information about this project, please visit: www.srd.ca/area-d-ocp-review
