Civic Addressing

A civic address is a unique identifier for individual developed properties and is the primary identification for dwellings. It is used for navigation, wayfinding and as an end point for many emergency calls.

Your civic address is the primary physical feature used by emergency responders when locating the source of an emergency call. Thus, displaying clear, visible signage at the start of a driveway &/or at each occupied dwelling is essential to ensuring timely response of emergency personnel.

Physical signage should be installed in a clear, unobscured location at the start of a driveway and placed perpendicular to the access road to make it visible from both directions. High visible, reflective signage is preferred to ensure visibility in the dark.

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is the issuing authority for civic addressing and works in collaboration with the North Island 9-1-1 Corporation to establish accurate and sequential house numbering throughout the region.

The SRD will issue new addresses, amend existing or clarify on individual sites for properties within the region at no charge. An undeveloped lot is not typically addressed until development is underway, at which time, a new power connection to the property requires a civic address be assigned.

The SRD civic addressing information is shared with a large list of third parties including emergency agencies (RCMP, BC Ambulance, local firehalls) and others (BC Assessment, Land Titles Authority, Canada Post, BC Hydro, etc.).
