Extreme Weather Shelter Activated at Campbell River Community Centre

The shelter will be activated on the evening of November 8 and run from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on November 9, 2022.

Overnight temperatures are forecast to reach as low as -4°c in the coming days. The City of Campbell River, Strathcona Regional District and Campbell River Coalition to End Homelessness, are activating an Extreme Weather Shelter at the Campbell River Community Centre in response to the extreme temperatures. The shelter will be activated on the evening of November 8 and run from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on November 9, 2022.

The City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District have activated a joint Emergency Operation Centre to support this event. The extreme weather shelter will be staffed with professionals from the Coalition to End Homelessness to ensure support is provided to those attending the shelter and accessing this service. Funding for the shelter is provided by the Province through Emergency Management BC.

“This shelter could be the difference between life and death for people experiencing homelessness or living outdoors during extreme weather,” said Mayor Dahl. “Thank you to the community for your patience as we adjust programming at the Community Centre to provide warmth and shelter during these extremely cold temperatures.”

Groups with private Community Centre bookings will be contacted by the City if the Extreme Weather Shelter will affect their programming.

Thank you to the tremendous efforts of all staff, volunteers and partners for their role during this activation. Every person in an unsheltered situation is someone’s loved one, and it is during these emergencies that our community reaches out with empathy, compassion and support.
