COVID-19 Updates & Resources

Stay well, stay safe and stay informed with the SRD.

The SRD Parks Service manages over 50 parks and trail systems.

After careful preparation and planning; protocols have been put in place and the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is reopening select outdoor park facilities in the Region.

Although the majority of SRD parks and trails have remained opened, numerous outdoor amenities have been closed since March 23 to help limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The reopening follows the Province of BC’s May 6 announcement that easing of some restrictions will begin in mid-May through the BC Restart Plan.

Strathcona Gardens, Quadra Island Community Centre, regional campgrounds, playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment, picnic shelters and water fountains throughout the region remain closed at this time.  The SRD is focused on working within the health guidelines and provincial directives to have these facilities open as soon as we are advised that it is safe to do so.

The following SRD outdoor park facilities have reopened the week of May 25 – 29:
• Hagel Park Tennis/Basketball Courts – Electoral Area D
• Blenkin Park Facilities (Tennis/Basketball Courts and Skatepark) – Electoral Area C
• Cortes Island Tennis Court, Basketball Court and Skatepark – Electoral Area B

Maple Park Community Garden – Electoral Area D – The province has identified community gardens as an essential service due to them being an important food source for the users.  In response to this, the SRD recently reopened the Maple Park Community garden to its existing members only with enhanced safety protocols in place.  The community garden remains closed to the general public at this time.

While enjoying SRD parks and trails please practice social distancing by staying at least 1.8 meters or six feet apart from other park users.  Preliminary studies have shown COVID-19 can live up to three days on plastic and steel surfaces.  Please take extra precautionary measures and practice self sanitizing if touching public surfaces such as rails, handles etc.  If you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with someone positive for COVID-19 please do not visit SRD parks and trails at this time.

Parks are being routinely inspected and any park closures or social distancing violations observed are being addressed.
