Emergency Communications Team Information

During disasters and other serious emergency situations, a proven reliable means of communication has been emergency radio communications, notably “amateur” or “ham” radio. In February 2017 Strathcona Regional District formed an Emergency Communications Team (ECT) who train regularly and often take part in emergency exercises so that they are prepared for any crisis situation that arises.

These Industry Canada licensed radio operators report to the local Emergency Program Coordinator and are task driven to supply both voice and digital messaging services (within the amateur radio spectrum) on an as-required basis. The mandate of the ECT is to provide effective, organized and reliable backup emergency communications for the Strathcona Regional District’s Emergency Operation Centres, Emergency Support Services Facilities, Disaster First Aid Stations, and neighbourhoods in times of crisis
