Solid Waste Services

Waste & collection services for Cortes Island & Sayward Valley.

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) provides solid waste services to residents living in the Sayward Valley (Electoral Area A) and on Cortes island (Electoral Area B).

Area A – Sayward Valley

  • Within the Sayward Valley, once a week roadside waste pick-up is available. For service interruption alerts please follow this link: Waste Management Service Alerts
  • Sayward Solid Waste Clean-Up Days – Clean-Up Days in Sayward is an event that happens three times a year. Household waste items that are too large for regular waste collection can be discarded on the scheduled days.   Upcoming Clean-Up Days can be found on SRD’s events page > HERE.

Area B – Cortes Island

  • Within Cortes Island, weekly roadside pick up for both waste and recycling is available.

Area C – Quadra Island

  • Solid Waste collection is not a service provided by the SRD.  Residents must arrange pickup with private contractors (talk to your neighbours).  The SRD cannot recommend any particular contractor.

Sept 26, 2023 – Important Info for Quadra Island Residents
Effective October 31st 2023 Waste Management (WM) will discontinue the True-Value garbage sticker program. Instead, they are introducing a new, streamlined curbside collection program.  Still have stickers past October 31?  No problem, call WM to set up your collection service and you can use the sticker for an extra bag at any time!

While change can be challenging, this service aims to deliver a more efficient and hassle-free experience.  The WM team is here to assist you at every step, ensuring any questions or concerns are addressed.

To sign up for your new WM automated collection service, visit www.wm.com and click on the ‘Get Residential Waste Service’ link.  Choose the option that best suits your needs today!

Area D – Oyster Bay/Buttle Lake

  • Curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste pick-up are not a service provided by the Strathcona Regional District.
Rural area residents are responsible for setting up their own curbside pick-up through private providers, or taking their garbage and recyclables to a Comox Strathcona Waste Management facility.
