SRD Seeks Binding Arbitration to Resolve Strathcona Gardens Labour Dispute

We apologize for the disruption in service and programming. Further to our commitment to the community, we are able to offer arena ice time during the USW labour dispute.

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is committed to resolving the labour dispute with the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1-1937  members at Strathcona Gardens. After 7 months of bargaining, both committees left the table in July 2021, with a tentative deal to present to their respective parties. This 4-year tentative agreement included general wage increases which are on par with agreements with local governments across Vancouver Island (2%, 2%, 2% and 2.25% annually). The Strathcona Regional Board approved the tentative deal, but the USW bargaining committee failed to ratify the agreement with their members.

The Regional District has requested the USW return to the table via binding arbitration conducted by a mutually agreed upon arbitrator. The USW has yet to respond to the requests to return to the table, made on October 25, 2021, November 1, 2021 and November 17, 2021.

We apologize for the disruption in service and programming. Further to our commitment to the community, we are able to offer arena ice time during the USW labour dispute.
