NEWS | SRD Recognizes Steve Sierzputoski’s 40-Year Contribution as a Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer

.

(Campbell River, BC) – The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) proudly recognizes Steve Sierzputowski for achieving an extraordinary milestone: 40 years of dedicated volunteer service with Campbell River Search and Rescue (CRSAR).

“I feel confident speaking on behalf of so many by stating that Steve is an absolute rock. He quietly shows up when help is needed, works on communication systems when no one else is around to see him, and can be relied upon for words of wisdom when decisions need to be made,” said SRD Manager of Emergency Services – Shaun Koopman. “Steve is at his best when he is enjoying a good search of logging roads in his FJ Cruiser, complete with auxiliary lighting, an excess of communications devices, rescue and recovery gear, and a big grin. There are no words that can truly capture what Steve has contributed to his community.”

Campbell River Search and Rescue (CRSAR) is responsible for land and inland waterway search and rescue across a vast region—stretching from the Oyster River north to Port Hardy, east to Bute Inlet and portions of the BC mainland coast, and west to Nootka Island. This area represents one of the largest SAR response zones in the province. CRSAR works closely with neighbouring SAR groups, the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Canadian Forces 442 Rescue Squadron to provide the highest level of response for missing and injured persons.

In addition to his SAR work, Steve is a founding member of SRD’s Disaster Communications Team, which provides a crucial backup when regular communication systems—such as telephone networks and email—are disrupted or unavailable.

Steve’s peers also shared reflections on his impact:

  • “Steve helped me right from the start—no question was too uninformed. He was kind, patient, and helpful.” — Nancy D
  • “Apart from being totally on top of radio installations, programming, and repairs, Steve offers his in-depth knowledge of local logging roads and camping spots. While he rarely heads up management of tasks these days, the number of times he shows up unannounced and simply offers support is amazing.” — Tim F
  • “Steve was my ‘Elmer’ (mentor) in ECT/ESS, then when I transitioned to SAR, he did a fantastic job orienting me to the SAR world.” — Matt F
  • “Trustworthy, reliable, accurate, consistent, and a real team player—what an asset to our team.” — Chris C
  • “Steve is always willing to help out and share what he knows—and he’s always good to go for a rip on a forestry road!” — David K
