Village of Sayward: Water Conservation & Landslide Update

.

The Village of Sayward, in partnership with the Strathcona Regional District (SRD), is providing an update on water conservation efforts and next steps related to the Newcastle Creek landslide.

Next Steps – Newcastle Creek Landslide Assessment

Due to ongoing turbidity issues in water drawn from Newcastle Creek following the landslide that occurred on Oct. 23, 2025, the Village of Sayward and the Strathcona Regional District are seeking additional support from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR).

This support would enable a geotechnical assessment of the Newcastle Creek watershed and the preparation of a report outlining potential remediation and mitigation options. If approved, a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey of the watershed is anticipated in early 2026 and would provide significantly more detailed information to support the assessment.

Public Advisory

Thank you to residents for their continued efforts to conserve drinking water while Sayward’s Public Works staff continue work at the Water Treatment Plant and the Newcastle Creek water intake.

At this time, the Water Treatment Plant, water intake and reservoir are operating well, and there are no new updates to report. Should conditions change, residents will be notified through Alertable and the official communication channels of the Village of Sayward and the Strathcona Regional District.

The Village of Sayward and the Strathcona Regional District appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation.
