Emergency Services – Public Art Projects
The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) is seeking artist submissions for two public art projects that support community awareness and resilience through creative expression.
This project is fully funded through the Disaster Risk Reduction / Climate Adaptation grant funding stream in order to enhance community identify and foster social connection.
Project 1: Walters Island Tsunami Wave Public Art Sculpture
The Strathcona Regional District is accepting submissions from artists to supply and install a sculpture that signifies the wave of a tsunami. The purpose of this sculpture is to better draw in people towards the Tsunami Evacuation Map near the government wharf (post office).
Wave sculpture criteria:
- No higher than 8-feet tall.
- No glass.
- No sharp edges.
- Constructed of low maintenance materials.
- Includes installation cost.
- Possess high wind resistance (strong foundation).
- Maximum cost of $8,000.
The deadline to supply and install the sculpture is January 31, 2026.
Project 2: Cortes Island Water Tank Murals
The Strathcona Regional District is accepting submissions from artists to paint a mural(s) that signifies adapting successfully to a changing climate to inspire ingenuity, conversation and hope. The murals are to be painted on 4 different tanks located at:
- Mansons Landing Firehall (2 tanks)
- Sutil Road (2 tanks)
Each water tank is approximately 12’ diameter x 20’ high. The budget available for this work is $4,200 per mural. Submissions can consist of one or more rendering.

Submissions must include:
- A visual rendering of the proposed artwork
- A written description explaining how the work meets the project criteria
Deadline for submissions: Monday, July 28, 2025, at 4:00 PM.
Eligible submissions will be ranked by a Selection Committee composed of members from the community, before proceeding to the Regional Board for approval. The successful proponent will be notified on August 21st, 2025.
All art projects must be completed and installed by January 31, 2026.
