FIRESMART WORK ON YOUR PROPERTY – Quadra Island

Thank you for your interest in the FireSmart Crew Member position on Quadra Island. This program has concluded for 2025, and we are no longer accepting new submissions.

What is the FireSmart Crew Member?

The FireSmart Crew Member is available to provide assistance to 70 different Quadra Island homeowners to help them take proactive steps towards wildfire risk reduction. The FireSmart Crew Member can work on a variety of low-risk tasks your home and property such as:

  • Clearing Debris: Using hand tools to remove dry leaves, branches, and other flammable materials from your property.
  • Moving Firewood Piles: Relocating firewood, ensuring it’s stored at a proper distance from your home.
  • Cleaning Gutters: Cleaning gutters (limited to 10 feet high) to prevent the buildup of combustible materials.

Please note that different priorities and scope limits will be applied based on the FireSmart Home Assessment, as determined by the Regional District’s Wildfire Risk Reduction Coordinator.

 

Who is eligible to receive the FireSmart Crew Member service?

All road accessible homeowners on Quadra Island are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to homeowner’s who:

  • Are facing barriers with undertaking FireSmart work on their property; and
  • Reside outside of the South Quadra Island Fire Protection Area.

 

How to submit an application

  • Pick up and drop off an application at the Quadra Island Community Centre office located at 970 West Road during their regular office hours Monday – Thursday 8:00am-4:00pm and Friday 8:00am – 2:00pm.
  • Submit an application online at www.srd.ca/qi-firesmart (See application form below)

Applications will be accepted until program is full (limited spots available). Be sure to apply as soon as possible to secure your preferred date and time.

 

Is there a prerequisite to submitting an application?

Yes

In order to apply for a free day of work on your property from the FireSmart Crew Member you must have a FireSmart Home Assessment previously completed. If you have already a completed a FireSmart Home Assessment then do one of the following:

  • Upload it as a PDF attachment when submitting your application. (See application form below)
  • Scan it and send it to wrr@srd.ca.
  • Drop off at the Strathcona Regional District’s office located at 990 Cedar St. between 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday to Friday.
  • Staple your FireSmart Home Assessment to the application you submit at the Quadra Island Community Centre.

 

How do I get a FireSmart Home Assessment completed?

To book your FREE home assessment contact SRD’s Wildfire Risk Reduction Coordinator at wrr@srd.ca | 250-914-9234

  • Assessments are free and take up to one hour.
  • You will receive a detailed report, specific to your property’s wildfire vulnerabilities
  • Report is only available to the homeowner and the assessor – not shared with anyone else.
