EVACUATION ALERT remains in place for Owens Bay Community, Sonora Island.
Upon recommendation of the BC Wildfire Service, residents south of Hyacinth Lake and Dorr (43 District Lots) DO NOT need to evacuate at this time as conditions have been favourable and the winds are reducing.
The interface fire is currently 3 hectares. BC Wildfire Service currently has 17 firefighters on site, 4 helicopters and one boat devoted to this response, this is in addition to the response support received from the community volunteer firefighters of Sonora Island and the Outer Discovery Islands. We are pleading that citizens avoid coming to the area to allow resources to operate safely.
We cannot speak highly enough of the residents that came together for the initial response in an organized and caring fashion to protect their community.
A further update will be issued by 4pm today, Friday August 13th.
